The questions

1. Night one, chapters 1 to 3. Fern saves Wilbur before she knows anything about him. Was that brave, or was it just what anyone should do?
2. Night two, chapters 4 to 6. Wilbur is lonely in a barn full of animals. How can you be lonely in a crowded place?
3. Night three, chapters 7 to 9. Wilbur learns what the smokehouse means. How did it feel to hear him find that out?
4. Night four, chapters 10 to 12. The word in the web changes how the grown-ups treat Wilbur. Why do people believe a word more than they believe their own eyes?

Running the night

• Pick the night before anyone leaves the last meeting. A fixed weeknight beats a good date.
• Text the sheet's first question two days ahead. It is the only prep anyone will do.
• Something to eat that does not need a plate on a lap.
• One person keeps time. Ninety minutes, then the book talk stops.
• Start with the round: one sentence each on where they got to. No apologies allowed.
• End by naming the next book and the next date out loud.
