The twenty minutes a night system
Last updated 19 August 2026.
Twenty minutes a night is about 12 pages. That is 300 pages in 25 nights, which fits inside a month with nights to spare. We built the club on that number because it is true on a tired Tuesday, not just on a good Sunday.
The math, written out
Pages divided by twelve, rounded up, is your number of nights. A 240-page book is 20 nights. A 350-page book is 30 nights, which is why 350 is the ceiling for a Shelf pick. Anything longer stops being a month and starts being a project, and projects are what people quit.
How to protect the slot
- Attach it to something that already happens: after the kids' lights are out, before the show.
- Keep the book where the slot happens. A book in a bag is a book you will not open.
- Set a timer for twenty minutes and stop when it goes off, even mid-chapter. Stopping while you still want to read is what brings you back.
- Miss a night without paying it back. Debt is what kills the habit; the spare nights in the month already cover you.
- If a book is not working after three nights, put it down and start the next one. Finishing something is the habit, not finishing everything.
Questions dads ask
- How many pages can you read in twenty minutes?
- About twelve, at an unhurried adult pace with a normal novel. Some nights it is twenty, some nights it is six. Twelve is the number we plan with.
- How long does it take to read a 300-page book at twenty minutes a night?
- Twenty-five nights, which fits inside a month with nights to spare. That spare room is the point: the plan survives the nights you miss.
- Is it better to read a lot on the weekend instead?
- A long weekend session is a good bonus and a bad plan. The nightly slot is what makes the book move when the weekend disappears.
